While still a jazz guitarist, the American Scott Feiner fell in love with the sound of the pandeiro, which he first heard in Olinda, and changed instruments. Six years after this revelation he has released the convincing "Pandeiro Jazz" (Delira Música), featuring original compositions alongside those by Stevie Wonder, John Coltrane and Horace Silver, among others.

John Coltrane (Giant Steps) with a pandeiro groove? Steview Wonder (Big Brother), Horace Silver (Song for the Father) and Wayne Shorter (United) on the "platinelas" (jingles)? The one responsible for this jazz (soul) samba, with such an original flavor, is the New Yorker Scott Feiner. An ex-jazz guitarist, he heard a boy playing pandeiro on the street in Olinda (Northeastern, Brazilian city) in 1999 and was converted. Four years after living in Brazil and learning to play the instrument he captured this unique fusion on the recently released CD Pandeiro Jazz, alongside Joel Frahm (saxophones), Freddie Bryant (guitars) and on selected tracks, Joe Martin (acoustic bass) and Beto Cazes (tamborim & shaker). “Scott found a way to keep the pandeiro at the center of the music, while surrounding it with rich, appealing texture”, wrote the highly respected jazz pianist Brad Melhdau in the CD’s liner notes.
